What Are Roof Shingles?
Roof shingles are a roof covering consisting of individual overlapping elements. These elements are typically flat, rectangular shapes laid in courses from the bottom edge of the roof up, with each successive course overlapping the joints below (available in various materials). Asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material used for residential roofing applications. Asphalt shingles come in a large number of styles and colors. They are easy to install, relatively affordable, last 20 to 50 years.
Metal shingles are extremely fire resistant, over the years, metal shingles have become increasingly popular.
How long can I expect my roof to last?
There are a few factors that can lengthen or shorten the life of your roof, but in general, an asphalt roof can be expected to last about 20 years, while a metal roof will last a conservative 50 years, some factors like the weather, extreme weather, and maintenance can affect the lifespan of your roof.
